Star Wars – The Last Jedi (2017)

**This review has zero spoilers!**

I’ve felt like I’ve been waiting soooo long for this movie to come out and hey! Christmas is just around the corner and that of course means some sweet, sweet Star Wars time.

As I’m writing this, I’ve just come out of a 3:30am showing and I even booked a half night off work just to squeeze the time in – DEDICATION. Me and my boyfriend even got interviewed by the BBC when we came out, but no biggy ….

Anyway, what I’m getting at is I was pretty darn excited to catch up with the rebellion gang and see what Kylo Ren was going to get up to in round 2.

Obviously it’s pretty hard to write a review when you need to be 100% strict with the no blabbing policy, but I’m going to try my darndest!

Lets kick things off with the characters; I haven’t written any previous Star Wars reviews so you guys won’t know my feelings on actors and my views on the Force Awakens, but long story short I love Finn and Poe – I think they’re likeable characters with plenty of depth and Oscar and John put in very strong performances.

Now I really like Daisy Ridley as a person. In every interview I’ve watched her in she puts herself across wonderfully and she’s beautiful to look at on the big screen – but when it comes to Rey there’s just something missing.

I feel like Daisy suffers in the same way Emma suffered in the Harry Potter series. She’s a newbie who doesn’t quite seem to bring the same presence as others in the cast. Likeable and definitely someone you want to get behind, but the weaknesses are still quite clear.

That moves me on nicely to Adam Driver! The real force (no pun intended) behind the movie and someone who completely owns it every time they make an appearance. He is absolutely one of the best rising stars in Hollywood at the minute but it’s when he’s on screen that Rey’s character doesn’t seem up to scratch.

Carrie and Mark are back again and it’s good to see that after 30 years Skywalker’s still got it. Keep an eye out for Benecio Del Toro too as he’s always a treat.

The story itself didn’t blow me away! There was quite a lot of progression to the main plot and a few new faces that were well received, but there were also a lot of things that didn’t seem to be explained or resolved properly and not in a ‘oooo neat cliffhanger way’ in a ‘lets just sweep this under the rug’ kind of way.

It was quite predictable and I didn’t witness anything that exceeded my expectations or made me think wow! what a movie! THAT BEING SAID; it definitely didn’t disappoint either.

My boyfriend (who’s blog you can check out here) did make a good point though. He said that if this wasn’t a Star Wars movie and it didn’t involve characters we were already invested in, the film itself wouldn’t have been that impressive, but at the end of the day what fan doesn’t want to catch up with the people that they’ve learnt to love.

I’m not going to lie – I had a bloody good time watching this film and I definitely preferred Rian’s to J.J’s but I just wish it had that little something else that would blow my socks off. SHOCK ME STAR WARS! I DARE YOU!

7/10 – Will it make my top 10 of the year? I don’t think so, but I still really liked it and the flame of the franchise is still burning brightly.

SIDE NOTE – I will be updating this post in weeks to come with some juicy spoiler filled opinions but for now I’m going to leave it as vague as possible. Go and see the movie for yourselves and be sure to let me know what you think!
