Our old friend Lara Croft sets out to find her father by fooling the footsteps he took when he disappeared seven years ago.
Alicia Vikander is absolutely perfect as Lara Croft. From the look to the attitude, she has it all.
From one of the very first scenes we can see that there’s no denying she’s in fantastic physical shape which really helps make the whole falling from cliffs and running for ages without needing to sit down, a little more believable …
Obviously casting an amazing actress like Vikander can have it’s cons as well as pros. I found that she tended to make others look a little weaker in their roles and by others, I mean Dominic West.
OK I’ve never liked him, but the way he kept repeating the word ‘sprout’ every time he was on screen made me shudder. It was not cute & endearing as it was intended, it was annoying and cringe.
Speaking about other characters, I really liked Daniel Wu and would’ve loved to have seen more of him throughout – I kind of kept forgetting he was a thing. ALSO the villain wasn’t really mind blowing; pretty simple and seemed to be used as a bit of a stepping stone for things to come.
When it comes to the story, I actually found it really enjoyable! I recently played through the 2013 reboot game and I agree that this movie stays true to all the things we’ve come to know and love. The puzzles, the fighting and an unnecessary amount of jumping.
Sure, it’s a basic story and nothing that’s going to rock your world but it does what it says on the tin. There’s a few thrills, a couple of sassy lines and most of all there’s Lara.
I found it to 100% be the best video game adaptation that’s come out to date (not that there’s much competition mind you).
It’s escapism at it’s finest. If you can sit back and allow some of the unrealistic elements and silly lines, you’ll definitely have fun. ONE OTHER POINT! They definitely need to work on the trailers next time (and I do hope that there’s a next time) because I thought they were so terrible I almost skipped seeing it all together.
7/10 – I’m really glad that I gave it a slice of my time and I am actually looking forward to hopefully having a couple of sequels.
