This is straight up probably one of the best suspense building films I’ve ever seen in my life. Sure, the story itself wasn’t too mind blowing or different BUT the way in which it was put together was so unique in the best possible way.
‘In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.’
From the very opening scenes we are hit hard and shown that the bad guys in this film definitely aren’t taking any prisoners. YOU MAKE A SOUND AND YOU WILL DIE.
It’s kind of like if Reynolds Woodcock morphed into a monster and someone scraped their bread too loudly … (A little Phantom Thread humour for you there)
The family seem to have got to grips with their new life as best as possible and have put together plans and systems to work with it. They make great decisions and seem up to the task of surviving.
Blunt and Krasinski were fantastic of course and Noah Jupe is my favourite child actor of the moment. Millicent Simmonds was great too but MY GOD! her character was sooo fucking dumb. I found myself getting more and more annoyed with her as the film went on.
It felt a little bit like Signs. The setting, the pacing but sadly no Mel Gibson in sight.
I’ve read online that some viewers were a little cheesed off with all the plot holes but I feel like we don’t need to have all of the questions answered. We can assume things and put pieces together for what fits with us and that’s what I love. It’s simple and lets you decide what really matters.
Mainstream horror is making a comeback and I couldn’t be happier! With films like ‘The House That Jack Built’, ‘Hereditary’ and the ‘Susperia’ & ‘Halloween’ comebacks it’s safe to say I’m excited for what’s around the corner.
8/10 – A real experience. I just wonder if it’ll hold up when you’re watching it at home.
